Flute

Kumi Nakagawa was born in Tokyo, Japan. In 1987 she moved to New York, where she started her musical studies. She was a member of the New York All State Band and Orchestra, and from 1992 to 1994 she attended the Manhattan Schol of Music Pre-college division. After returning to Tokyo in 1994, she continued her flute studies with Ryu Noguchi. Ms. Nakagawa graduated from Toho Gakuen School of Music in March 2003, with a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance as well as Music Education. Ms. Nakagawa began her Masters in Music degree at UCLA the fall of 2003, studying the flute with Sheridon Stokes. She finished her Masters in Music degree from UCLA in June 2005. She has studied the flute with Masahiro Arita, Shuichi Uemura and has participated in Master Classes given by William Benett, Paul Meisen and Ransom Wilson. She has also held a position as a temporary teacher at Shoei Joshigakuen in Tokyo, teaching both middle school and high school students. Ms. Nakagawa was chosen as a member of the Wintergreen Music Festival in the summer of 2004, and is currently the principal flautist for the UCLA Philharmonia and UCLA Wind Ensemble. She was also elected to be in the Gluck Woodwind Quintet, where she performed in Los Angeles, and taught music lessons at high schools in the Los Angeles area. In July 2005, Ms. Nakagawa was a flute teacher at the UCLA Summer Music Academy.
